Entry 04
Know thyself was written as a command. I've always admired those who come out of the gate having a sense of self, but also wondered if they really just didn't care. Do people really never ask the question, “who am I and why am I here?”
Is knowing who you truly are and seeking the answer a question only few seek the answer to?
I remember searching for the answer several decades and it wasn't until I had streaks of silver hair that it dawned on me I was looking at it all wrong. People are conditioned to answer the question with a title or think of themselves as their stuff. Titles as in what they do like a doctor or librarian and stuff represent people who identify with their vehicles or fashion labels.
That's not the self. Unfortunately in modern society it's all most people have. It's crazy to me since none of the things people think are important last. Very few names are legendary compared to the number of humans who have walked planet earth. Accumulated stuff, shiny stuff, expensive stuff, fancy job titles, acronyms after your name on a business card and being a CEO, celebrity or pope may be something to celebrate for a few decades but then, proof, it's gone and in a generation you aren't even remembered.
How does knowing self change this? Why is it important?
It's important while you're here.
When we are our true self anything we do or have is no longer important because we've been taught it's supposed to be. We don't seek desired positions, accolades or stuff based on what mainstream conditioning has determined is valuable.
We determine importance.
Life is a short experience and wasted when you don't know thyself and if you have been a seeker of the question, “ who am I and why am I here?”
Good.
You are soul incarnated to have a human experience. Whatever you choose.
